14.2.9 OpenVMS AXP and DEC7000 Crash Dump Problems
There are two situations on DEC7000 systems running OpenVMS AXP V6.1 which may
cause only partial crash dumps to be written that are no use for analysis:
On systems with large (512MB+) memories, booted from a system disc via the CI, writing
the dump may stop prematurely with "Halt Code 05". This is caused by a bug in PNBT-
DRIVER.EXE. The fix is to apply the following patch kit:
OpenVMS AXP patchkit, AXPBOOT01_061, available as CSCPAT_2091.
The second problem involves systems booted via DSSI. Here, if a console key is pressed
while the dump is being written, the system may hang. The fix is either not to touch the
console, or to upgrade the console firmware to V4.1. If you can’t wait for V4.1 a "patched"
version of V4.0 is available from:
PROXY"fal$access"::allen_public:[public]AXP7_IPMT_PC.SYS
14.3 Other Goodies
I have assembled the following information on known problems from BLITZs, STARS, Notes
and local knowledge. Some bits are directly quoted, others I have edited (as you can probably
tell!)
14.3.1 DEC/VAX 7000 Air Flow Pressure Switch Causes System Shutdown
Air flow pressure switch on the CCL module (DEC P/N 54-20300-01) can cause the system to
perform intermittent shutdowns due to false air flow faults. An FCO was issued to replace
CCL module (see Section 13). Temporary fix is to jumper out the pressure switch.
14.3.2 Battery wiring on DEC/VAX 10000s
Failure to observe proper polarity when connecting battery wiring can cause severe power
system damage, overheating and emission of smoke. Note that ORANGE wires are POS-
ITIVE (+) polarity and BLUE wires are NEGATIVE (-) polarity. See "DEC 10000 AXP
SYSTEM VAX 10000 INSTALLATION GUIDE" (EK-100EB-IN.002), sections 2.15, 2.16 and
2.17.
14.3.3 CIXCD Microcode on Alpha/VAX VMSclusters
Only the CIXCD-AC (T2080-YA module) is supported with the Laser platform. It normally
comes loaded with VAX compatible ucode (CIXCD.BIN). However, DEC7000/10000 systems
need different ucode that is AXP compatible (CIMNA.BIN). Factory installed options will be
OK, but if you install one you must run the LFU to load the correct ucode. Field spares
could have either ucode on board so be careful.
14.3.4 VAX 7000/10000 CIXCD Write Error Interupt (WEI) Errors
While booting a VAX 7000/10000, VAX-VMS creates two error log entries that are caused
by the CIXCD testing WEI (write error interrupt) logic. The error log entries appear to be
reporting a real error when they are actually reporting a selftest diagnostic activity. If the
errors have the following footprint, you can safely ignore them.
The errorlog entries only occur when the system is being booted
